General:
Perennial herb from a lopsided-egg-shaped, scaly bulb, the outer scales papery-white or greyish, without a fibrous network; flowering stems ascending to erect, 5-8 cm tall, flattened, 2-angled or -winged, the margins obscurely scalloped.
Leaves:
Basal leaves usually 2, flattened, curved and hooked at the tips, distinctly longer than the flowering stem, 1-3 mm wide, smooth, the margins sometimes minutely toothed; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a compact, terminal umbel of several to many, stalked flowers, above 2 membranous, broadly lanceolate bracts, the stalks about as long as the flowers; flowers pink to rose-purple, bell-shaped, of 6 distinct tepals, the tepals 6-12 mm long, oblong-lanceolate tapering to pointed tips; stamens 6, about 2/3 as long as the tepals; pistil 1, 3-chambered.
Fruits:
Capsules, more or less egg-shaped, 3-lobed, with 6 low, rounded crests; seeds 6 or fewer, black.
